Many people refer to our older years in life as the “Golden Years,” and in many ways they are because we have the time to do what we have always wanted to do. While this freedom and independence is wonderful, we must find ways to balance this with our safety. By taking some minor precautions, we can enjoy this time to  fullest and maintain our independence for years to come!

First off, it is a good idea to do a thorough assessment of what your abilities are. Sit down and look at what activities you have been doing the past year, and how well you are able to do them. Take note of what things you are having difficulty with. Make sure to get input from your loved ones who see you often. We often are unable to see in ourselves what others see, so use their help. There is no shame in admitting you may need help and you can’t do everything we used to.

Once you have an idea of what your capacity is, keep moving. When we become sedentary, our joints become stiffer, our muscles become weaker and our senses become duller. So make sure you stay active, within the guidelines of what you are able to do safely. If you are still unsure of what is within your ability, go see your doctor and he or she may be able to send you to a physical therapist that can create a customized exercise program for you. While at the doctor, ask him or her about what medications you are on, and if any of them may cause you to be at increased risks for injuries and falls.

There are other simple steps you can take to keep yourself safe. Make sure to find appropriate shoes. Making sure they fit well is very important, but you also want shoes that don’t have high heels or slick soles that will slide. Remove hazards within your house, such as loose rugs, cords, and items that clutter up walking spaces. Store things in easy to reach places, make sure you have adequate lighting, and always be willing to ask for help, whether from a person or from an assistive device like a cane or a walker.

By taking these simple steps, you will be able to enjoy your “Golden Years” and maintain your independence for a long time to come.
