Easing The Transition
February 17, 2016
As our loved ones get older, it often becomes very difficult for them to stay at home safely. There are many different options of where they can live, but even after finding the right facility, we want to make sure their transition into it is smooth and they get the most out of their stay there.
Make sure you allow your loved one to be as involved in the process as their health and mental capacity allows. Find out what their fears may be, and address them as well as possible. If they are worried about their finances and feel they may be ‘kicked out’ – let them know that this shouldn’t be a concern for them.
In order to make the actual moving day as smooth as possible, pick the best time of day for the senior to move. For example, if they are their best in the afternoon, then move during the afternoon. It will be difficult for them to give up their home and their possessions, so make sure you bring some of their most prized possessions with them to their new home to help them feel comfortable.
Once in the facility, encourage your loved ones to be active in the community. We may think that Mom was always a loner and will not like many social activities, but people change – so encourage them to get involved. Let them know that they are in charge, and if they have any issues then they should ask questions.
As a family, be supportive of your loved ones. Understand that this is a big change for them and it may take time. Keep in touch with them frequently – whether it’s by phone or by visiting in person. Advocate for them; let the staff know you care about them and explain to the staff what unique needs they may have.
Many people are scared when having to give up their home, but this can often be a fun and exciting time for them if the right steps are taken to ensure their comfort. Without the worries that come with being a homeowner, along with the socialization that they can get at these facilities – you may find they are thriving and are happier than ever!
